Art and Design

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. At Woodlands Primary, art and design engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they are able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. In Key Stage 2, children will learn and extend their knowledge of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Pupils are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Computing (ICT)

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. Currently, we are looking at ‘Image and Animation’, building on children’s skills as we introduce the new computing curriculum.

We are an eSafety school and recognise the importance of teaching our children at Woodlands Primary how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

Design and Technology

As your child progresses in Key Stage 2, they will learn through a variety of creative and practical activities, where pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.

When designing and making, pupils are engaged through researching and developing ideas around design innovation. Our pupils at Woodlands Primary will generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design.

Cooking and Nutrition

Woodlands Primary is a Healthy School. Our pupils learn about the importance of nutrition and how diet affects the body. They have opportunities to learn how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating in our new kitchen that was supported by the School’s PTA. Instilling a love of cooking in pupils will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

Geography

Geography at Woodlands inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupil’s progresses through Key Stage 2, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

Children in Key Stage 2 extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. They should develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

History

Pupils learn coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Children are given the tools to develop curiosity to know more about the past through excellent excursions and outdoor learning experiences. Teachers equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Pupils continue to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history, establishing clear narratives within and across the periods they study through out Key Stage 2. Pupils learn about connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms. They regularly address and sometimes devise historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference, and significance. They construct informed responses that involve thoughtful selection and organisation of relevant historical information. Pupils are taught to understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.

Music

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Our Pupil’s develop a love of music and their talent as musicians; we increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement through an inclusive curriculum that progresses right up to year 6. Pupils develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the music. In Year 4 children learn to play the guitar in class and, if subscribed to, take individual music lessons led by Ealing Music Service.

Physical Education

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Pupils in Key stage 2 continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. Staff extend the knowledge of the children in our care, by communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. The Pupil’s develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and improve their own performance.

In Year 4 pupils’ have the opportunity to learn how to swim and how to be safe in water. They are taught how to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. They master the use a range of strokes effectively such as, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke. Pupils are also taught how to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
